Selection of Explosion-Proof Overhead Cranes

The core principle in selecting an explosion-proof overhead crane is matching the explosion hazard classification of the environment and ensuring all components meet explosion-proof requirements. The selection process and key elements are as follows:

1. Determine the Explosion Hazard Classification of the Environment

This is the primary basis for selection. The following two points must be clarified:

Gas/Dust Group and Temperature Class: Based on the combustible substances present on site, determine their corresponding Explosion Group (e.g., IIA, IIB, IIC for gases, or Group III for dust) and Ignition Temperature. The maximum surface temperature of the crane equipment (T1-T6 class) must be lower than this ignition temperature.

Hazardous Area Classification: Define whether the crane will operate in Zone 0, 1, 2 (for gases) or Zone 20, 21, 22 (for dust). Different zones require different Equipment Protection Levels (EPL).

Correspondence Table: Hazardous Areas, Applicable Equipment Protection Levels, and Common Types of Protection

Hazardous Area (Zone)

Equipment Protection Level

Type of Protection (Example)

Zone 0 / Zone 20

Ga / Da

Intrinsic Safety (ia), Encapsulation (ma) - Crane main body is typically not suitable for this zone.

Zone 1 / Zone 21

Gb / Db

Flameproof (d), Increased Safety (e), Pressurized (px/py)

Zone 2 / Zone 22

Gc / Dc

Increased Safety (e), Non-sparking (nA), Restricted Breathing (nR)

2. Verify Explosion-Proof Configuration of Main Crane Components

A fully explosion-proof crane requires that all components capable of producing sparks, arcs, or high temperatures are of explosion-proof design:

Electrical Equipment: Motors (hoist, travel), brakes, control panels, limit switches, remote controls, etc., must carry the corresponding explosion-proof certification.

Mechanical Components: Hooks, wheels, and rail contact points that may generate mechanical sparks require materials such as copper alloy or stainless steel to prevent impact sparks.

Wiring: Cables must be run through explosion-proof flexible conduits, and connection ports must be sealed using explosion-proof cable glands.

3. Assess Environmental Adaptability Configuration

Consider the following configurations based on the specific operating environment:

Ingress Protection (IP) Rating: Environments with dust or moisture require a high IP rating (e.g., IP65).

Corrosion Protection: Chemical plant areas require enhanced anti-corrosion coatings (e.g., heavy-duty paint).

Special Requirements: Outdoor use requires consideration of rain and wind protection measures.

4. Verify Certification and Documentation

The crane must obtain an Explosion-Proof Certificate issued by an nationally authorized explosion-proof equipment inspection agency.

Review technical documentation to ensure the explosion-proof ratings of all components cover the intended working environment.

5. Installation, Operation, and Maintenance

Installation must comply with explosion-proof codes and be performed by qualified personnel.

Conduct regular inspections of the integrity of explosion-proof features (e.g., flame path surfaces, cable seals). Any maintenance must not alter the original explosion-proof condition.
