What Is a Gantry Crane?

A gantry crane (also called a portal crane or goliath crane) is a rail-mounted or rubber-tired lifting machine whose main girder is supported by legs on one or both sides. It is the most economical lifting solution for open-air storage yards, long-span workshops, freight stations, ports and warehouse areas.

Gantry cranes are classified by girder arrangement into single-girder, double-girder and semi-gantry cranes; by girder structure into box-girder and truss types; and by travel mode into rail-mounted (RMG) and rubber-tired (RTG) gantry cranes. Yufei cranes can be fully designed and manufactured in accordance with GB/T, ISO, FEM and EN standards, with customized lifting capacity, span, lifting height, duty class, control mode and power supply.

How to Choose the Right Gantry Crane

During selection, we recommend evaluating the following key parameters:

1. Determine the actual load:

Calculate on the basis of the maximum load (not the average load), and include the weight of lifting accessories such as the hook block and lifting beam. An oversized load rating only adds procurement and operating costs.

2. Determine the span and lifting height:

The span is the center-to-center distance between the two ground rails, and the lifting height is the distance from the ground to the highest hook position. Choosing the smallest span that still covers your working area can significantly reduce costs.

3. Match the duty class to actual usage frequency:

A3–A4 for intermittent operation and A5–A7 for continuous operation. An overly high duty class adds cost, while one too low shortens equipment life.

4. Define the working environment:

Specify indoor/outdoor installation, local wind zone, temperature range, humidity or salt spray, dust level, and whether explosion-proof design is required. Outdoor gantry cranes are usually fitted with an anemometer and a storm-pin / rail-clamp device.

5. Select power supply and control mode:

Confirm voltage/frequency (e.g. 380V/50Hz, 415V/50Hz, 460V/60Hz), and choose a pendant push-button station, wireless remote control, operator cabin, or PLC variable-frequency (VFD) control.

Quick Model Selection Guide

Load below 20 t with a small span?

Choose a single-girder gantry crane (MH) or a European-style single-girder crane; if your workshop already has a rail-supporting girder, a semi-gantry crane is an option.

Heavy loads, large spans or continuous operation?

Choose a box-girder double-girder or truss-type double-girder gantry crane.

Open, windy sites?

Truss-type single-girder and truss-type double-girder gantry cranes reduce wind load by 30%.

Container handling at ports or rail yards?

See RMG (fixed rails, automation-ready) and RTG (rubber-tired, mobile between blocks).

Bulk cargo such as coal, ore or grain?

A grab (clamshell) gantry crane handles loading/unloading, stacking and reclaiming in one machine.

Gantry Crane FAQ

Can products be customized?

Yes. Since working conditions vary, all our products are customized to detailed requirements. If you provide more information — such as lifting capacity, span, lifting height, power supply and other special requirements — we will issue a quotation very quickly.

What is the difference between single-girder and double-girder gantry cranes?

Single-girder gantry cranes suit lighter loads (typically below 20 t) and smaller spans (below 25 m), with lower cost and simpler maintenance. When the span exceeds 35 m, the lifting capacity exceeds 20 t, or a maintenance walkway on the girder is required, a double-girder MG structure offers better stiffness, deflection and long-term reliability.

What is the difference between box-girder and truss-type gantry cranes?

Truss gantry cranes use a lattice main girder and legs, giving lighter dead weight, better wind resistance and lower purchase cost — ideal for open, windy sites. Box structures are heavier, use more steel and demand stronger foundations, and are typically used for heavy-duty, high-duty-class applications.

What is a semi-gantry crane? When should I choose it?

A semi-gantry crane has one leg running on a ground rail while the other end beam runs on a rail-supporting girder installed along the building columns. If your plant already has a suitable existing rail-supporting girder, a semi-gantry crane saves budget and floor space — ideal for the side of a workshop or a warehouse entrance.

What is the maximum lifting capacity?

The maximum lifting capacity of our standard cranes is 500 t (up to 80 t for electric hoists). If this still cannot meet your operational needs, please contact us for special customization.

What operating modes are available?

The standard configuration is pendant push-button operation; wireless remote control and operator-cabin (joystick) operation are also available. Choose whichever you prefer — just let us know.

What is the lead time?

The lead time depends on the model, lifting capacity and degree of customization. Standard MH single-girder models ship within 30–45 working days; MHB semi-gantry cranes within 25–35 working days; European-style single-girder cranes within 30–60 days; European-style double-girder cranes within 45–75 days; and MG double-girder gantry cranes within 60–90 days. Other models are stated in the quotation according to specific requirements and parameters.

Do you provide installation and after-sales service?

Yes. We provide on-site installation guidance, commissioning, no-load / static-load / dynamic-load tests and operator training, with a 12-month whole-machine warranty, supply of original spare parts and 24/7 remote technical support.

My workshop has limited space — is a gantry crane right for me?

For low-headroom workshops, we have dedicated products, including low-headroom European-style gantry cranes and semi-gantry cranes. Please send your workshop dimensions to our engineers for detailed design.

Can gantry cranes work in hazardous environments?

For hazardous environments, an explosion-proof design is available. Please provide your site conditions to our professional sales manager for confirmation.
