How to select an overhead crane?

When purchasing an overhead crane, it is necessary to provide the supplier with the following essential parameters and requirements to ensure the equipment completely matches your working conditions. The supplier will conduct specific analysis and design accordingly.

1.Plant Conditions and Lifting Requirements

Plant Key Dimensions

Requirement: Provide the precise span of the plant (distance between columns on both sides), rail surface elevation (height of the rail installation surface), lowest point height of the roof truss lower chord, and column spacing.

Analysis: The supplier uses this to calculate the crane's maximum allowable span, ensuring safe clearance between the main girder/spreader at the upper lifting limit and the roof structure to prevent collisions.

Track and Civil Engineering Load-bearing

Requirement: Provide the load-bearing capacity of the track girders or columns, and the existing or planned track model/specification.

Analysis: The supplier will calculate the crane's maximum wheel load and strictly compare it with your civil engineering load-bearing capacity to ensure plant structural safety. Simultaneously, the track model affects the specification of the gantry travel wheels.

Lifted Cargo Data

Requirement: Specify the weight of the single heaviest piece of cargo (must include the weight of the spreader/lifting attachments), the cargo's maximum dimensions (length, width, height), and common types (e.g., steel coils, molds, packaged goods).

Analysis: This is the direct basis for determining the rated lifting capacity and lifting height. The cargo's size and form also influence the selection of the spreader (e.g., whether a dedicated spreader or electromagnetic lifter is needed).

2. Performance and Configuration Parameters

Rated Lifting Capacity and Duty Class

Requirement: Specify the rated lifting capacity for the main/auxiliary hook. Describe the average daily operating hours and intensity of use (e.g., lifts per hour).

Analysis: Lifting capacity is a core pricing factor. The intensity of use and load spectrum jointly determine the duty class (A1-A8), which directly dictates the design life and selection standards for core components like motors, reducers, and wire ropes, impacting equipment durability and cost.

Speed Parameters

Requirement: Specify requirements or expectations for hoisting speed, trolley travel speed, and gantry travel speed (in meters per minute).

Analysis: Speed is related to configurations like motor power and control systems. High-frequency, long-distance operations require higher speeds but increase cost and energy consumption. The supplier will design reasonable speeds based on your requirements.

Operation and Control Mode

Requirement: Choose the operation mode: cabin operation, pendant control, or remote control operation. Specify the control requirement: conventional control or variable frequency drive (VFD) control.

Analysis: The operation mode determines cab design, remote control system configuration, and power supply form (e.g., conductor bar). VFD control enables smooth starting/stopping and precise positioning, significantly reducing mechanical shock and extending equipment service life.

3.Environmental and Safety Requirements

Environmental and Special Requirements

Requirement: Describe the workshop's environmental conditions, such as whether it is high-temperature, high-dust, high-humidity, or contains corrosive/explosive gases.

Analysis: The supplier will determine the protection rating of electrical equipment (e.g., IP55), the insulation class of motors, the anti-corrosion process for steel structures (e.g., paint specification), or whether explosion-proof configuration is required.

Safety Devices

Requirement: Specify the required safety device needs for the equipment.

Analysis: Beyond standard-equipped devices like overload limiters, travel limiters, and emergency stop switches, the supplier can recommend adding dual-height limiters, anti-collision systems, operational status monitoring systems, etc., based on this.
